After a brief hesitation, the officer said, "Someone robbed an armored truck three days ago in the morning. Our colleagues went over, but all four of them were killed."
Luke and Selina's expressions darkened when they heard that.
The robbers had killed four police officers at once. How bold of them.
No wonder the black policewoman looked so busy and impatient.
Sonia apologized as a concession for their little argument earlier, and the four of them went to the office that the officer had pointed out.
Sonia leaned close and said in a low voice, "Luke, if we come here now, won't it be …"
Luke said helplessly, "Who knew it would be such a coincidence? But we're all police officers. How can we not investigate? "
Sonia frowned and fell silent.
Four LAPD officers had been killed in the line of duty. Didn't the Texas ranger named Mark die in the line of duty?
Luke's eyes twitched the moment he entered the office. Holy sh * t! Who are you going to start a war with?
The office wasn't a high-class one. It was only partitioned by wood and glass, but it was quite spacious.
Inside the fifty-square-meter room, a dozen or so police officers were checking their equipment and weapons with murderous intent.
Not to mention M4A1s and AR15s, they even had expensive HK416s. But wasn't this too much?
Even SWAT officers had to carry submachine guns and shotguns, but these county officers all had heavy firepower.
One of the officers at the door saw Luke and asked with a frown, "What are you doing?"
Luke flashed his badge. "Luke, LAPD."
The officer was stunned. "What's up?"
Luke said, "I'm here about the murder of the Texas ranger."
With an awful expression, the officer turned around and shouted, "Big Nick, a detective from LAPD is here to investigate the case."
Everybody in the office stopped what they were doing and looked over.
A moment later, a tall, bearded, middle-aged white man walked over with an unhappy expression. "What do you want to investigate?"
Luke said calmly, "Mark Owen, the Texas ranger who was killed three days ago. Do you remember him?"
Big Nick frowned. "Huh? So what? "
Luke said, "So, I want to know who approved the escort route."
Big Beard Nick's expression turned cold. "It's me. What else do you want to ask? Do you want to take me back to your interrogation room? "
Luke remained calm. "Mark Owen was a police officer. He died in the line of duty. I think his family needs an answer."
Nick's expression was ugly, but he didn't dare to say anything drastic.
Anyone who dared to mock a police officer who died in the line of duty would be ostracized. After all, no one liked their colleague to be a scumbag who didn't even respect a police officer who died in the line of duty.
Moreover, their colleagues had just died in the line of duty, so they couldn't speak carelessly.
"I see that you're very busy. Can we save each other's time and find a place to talk?" asked Luke.
Big Nick gestured, and they walked to a corner of the office. He kicked away a person who was busy packing his equipment. "Go over there and give our dear LAPD colleagues a seat."
After being kicked, the man grinned at Luke mockingly.
Luke didn't even look him in the eye.
He knew that it was easy for people to look down on his appearance, but he didn't rely on his face.
The conversation didn't last more than ten minutes before Luke took his leave.
Sonia was about to say something after she left the office, when Luke interrupted her. "Let's talk outside."
Sonia looked around and shut her mouth.
On the way to the outdoor parking lot, Luke asked, "Sonia, did you find anything?"
After a brief hesitation, Sonia said, "Luke, did you notice their clothes?"
Luke hummed in response. "They're all handmade and aren't cheap. What else? "
Sonia said, "Their shoes. I can't recognize everyone's shoes, but I happen to recognize the logo of Big Nick's leather boots. They're from a certain handmade shoe store in Los Angeles. "
Luke chuckled. "Let me guess. The price is very high, right?"
Sonia nodded. "I wanted to buy a pair for my dad as a birthday present last time, and even the cheapest custom-made pair cost almost two thousand dollars. The calfskin shoes that Captain Nick is wearing, on the other hand, cost at least twice as much. "
Selina clicked her tongue. "Isn't that several weeks' worth of our salaries?" She then looked at her own boots.
Fine, her boots were also handmade, and didn't have any logos, since Luke had modified them for her.
Compared to her pair of genuine, custom-made shoes, Big Nick's calf leather boots could only be considered trash.
The special alloy lining in her boots alone was worth almost ten thousand dollars, and that wasn't even including Luke's work fees.
On the side, Alessandro, a young Latino detective who shared the name of the drug lord that Luke had killed, said, "Several of their watches are worth a lot of money."
Luke looked at him. "How much?"
Alessandro said, "Three to five thousand dollars, and two more than ten thousand dollars."
Both Selina and Sonia clicked their tongues.
It wasn't unusual for a police officer to wear such an expensive watch, but the guys just now were all frontline officers who had to fight all the time. There was clearly something wrong with them wearing such expensive watches.
Dirtycop! (Dirty Cop)
Everybody thought of the same thing.
American police might not be strict, but a lot of them actually had dirty hands and feet.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department was the largest county-level police department in the United States, and the fourth largest in the country. It managed the vast area around downtown Los Angeles, and provided law enforcement services to forty-two of the 88 cities in its jurisdiction.
It had as many employees as LAPD did, and the population under its jurisdiction was similar to that of downtown Los Angeles.
It would be a joke to expect everyone to be obedient and law-abiding in this enormous county police department.
Honest officers wouldn't be able to do well here; they wouldn't be able to deal with the complicated affairs and interests of the department if they didn't have enough tricks up their sleeves.
Dustin was about to be promoted to captain, but he didn't dare wear expensive leather boots, clothes, or luxury watches.
Bearded Nick was only a sergeant, but he dared to wear it so blatantly. He was quite daring.
Luke also noticed more details.
With his keen eyesight, he easily noticed that four or five of the dozen people in the room had the same tattoo.
And that was just the ones that were exposed outside their clothes. The others might have tattoos too.
Clearly, Big Nick wasn't alone; he had a bunch of loyal subordinates, or rather, brothers.
As they talked, they arrived at the parking lot and got into their cars.
