"Since you're here, there's something I want you to do today. I hope you can accomplish it," said He Xiaoman, who had regained her elegant demeanor.
Even though she said she hoped Huo Yao could accomplish it, she conveyed a different meaning.
Huo Yao's lips twitched slightly. Before she could speak, He Xiaoman's mother, Yang Qiuhua, who had raised the body's original owner, walked out.
Yang Qiuhua patted He Xiaoman's arm and signaled her not to go overboard. Her eyes landed on Huo Yao and her expression subconsciously turned gentle. "Yaoyao, how did the contest go?"
"Uh huh," acknowledged Huo Yao softly before she replied lazily. "It was okay."
"Did you win?" asked Yang Qiuhua excitedly.
"Uh huh, I came in first," replied Huo Yao calmly. Replied Huo Yao calmly. There was not a trace of arrogance in her eyes. It was as though winning first place was a piece of cake for her.
Yang Qiuhua wiped her tears happily and said, "Good girl."
He Xiaoman frowned and asked the old lady quizzically. "What contest did she come in first?"
Yang Qiuhua looked at her with a smile and said proudly, "You have no idea. Not only is Yaoyao's grades excellent, but she is also..."
He Xiaoman noticed that the old lady did not answer her question directly. Instead, she praised Huo Yao's grades, so she immediately lost interest in the answer.
She raised her hand impatiently and interrupted Huo Yao. "Fine. I get it. You don't have to put on a good front for her. Given her grades, she wasn't even qualified to attend a key high school in the county. If it wasn't for the Lu family, she would probably only be able to attend a vocational high school."
He Xiaoman paused before she glanced at Huo Yao sarcastically. "Fish eyes are just fish eyes. They will never be pearls."
Yang Qiuhua instinctively looked at Huo Yao. She was worried that Huo Yao would be upset, so she hurriedly explained. "You haven't been taking care of her all these years. You have no idea how..."
He Xiaoman sneered and interrupted her again disapprovingly. "Mom, she's not my biological daughter, nor is she your biological granddaughter. Her surname is Huo. Whether she's good at school or not, it has nothing to do with me. I don't want to know."
Yang Qiuhua's face froze. The words she wanted to say got stuck in her throat. After a while, she said in a muffled voice, "Yaoyao is my granddaughter!"
He Xiaoman pinched her forehead. She could not figure out how Huo Yao had bewitched her. She did not like her biological granddaughter, but this uncultured impostor!
"She has enjoyed seventeen years of bliss in our Lu Family, but my biological daughter has suffered outside for seventeen years. Mom, wake up! Don't simply call someone your family!"
"You treat her as a family member, but she might just be using you to cheat money from us to subsidize her biological parents …"
"Shut up!" Yang Qiuhua trembled with anger. "I raised Yaoyao myself. I know better than you what kind of person she is. Don't use your words to judge her."
He Xiaoman's face turned livid. "Can't you tell good from evil? Mom, I think you're seriously ill. You've gone senile!"
Yang Qiuhua was in her sixties and had a heart condition. Her face turned pale when she heard He Xiaoman's words. She pressed her fists tightly against her chest.
