Min Yu did not eat much. He put down his chopsticks and asked her casually. "Did your brother call you?"

Huo Yao nodded. She paused for two seconds before she said, "It's okay if you go home later."

Min Yu's lips curved slightly. His eyes were as dark as ink, and his black and white eyes were distinct.

He waved for the waiter to pay the bill.

By the time Huo Yao reached home, half an hour had passed. Her fair cheeks were slightly rosy, especially her lips. They resembled red plums that had bloomed on a winter's day. They were bright red.

Song Ning scrutinized her daughter. Somehow, she felt that her daughter had changed after going out. Her eyes suddenly landed on her daughter's neck. She asked her daughter quizzically. "Yao, did you wear a scarf when you went out?"

Huo Yao tightened her scarf without batting an eyelid and replied. "Yes."

"Really?" Song Ning still felt that something was amiss.

She recalled that her daughter did not have a scarf like this.

"Uh huh. Maybe you didn't notice." Huo Yao walked over to the fridge and took out a bottle of iced coke. The cold drink slid down her throat, and the heat in her heart subsided.

Song Ning knew that her daughter never lied, so she did not dwell on it.

Seeing that Madam Song did not probe further, Huo Yao finished the bottle of coke and went back to her room without watching the New Year's Gala.

When she came out of the bathroom, the sound of firecrackers seemed to have reached its peak. Huo Yao opened the curtains and looked at the dazzling fireworks in the night sky.

She felt as though she had returned to the time when her grandmother was still around.

Every New Year, they would snuggle up together in the yard to set off fireworks and watch them.

Huo Yao suppressed the sourness in her throat.

She did not know where the countdown came from. When it reached zero, Huo Yao's lips moved. Her soft 'Happy New Year, Grandma' was drowned out by the sound of firecrackers outside.

Huo Yao's phone rang on the table. She stood in front of the window for a second before she went back to her room.

She picked up the phone.

"Happy New Year," said Min Yu's pleasant voice.

The sourness in Huo Yao's heart instantly disappeared when she heard his voice. She held her phone and said, "Happy New Year."

Someone knocked on the door. Huo Yao raised her head and glanced at it. She quickly hung up and walked to the door.

Huo Yanxi opened the door to see Huo Yao standing outside. He lowered his head awkwardly and did not look at Huo Yao's face. He handed her the red packet he had prepared beforehand and said in a low voice, "Happy New Year."

Huo Yao looked at the cautious Huo Yanxi. She no longer had any prejudice against him. Now, all she felt was regret and helplessness. She wanted to redeem herself.

She remained silent for two seconds before reaching out to take the red envelope. "Thank you, Big Brother. Happy New Year to you too."

Huo Yanxi listened to his sister's voice. Although she still sounded distant, he sensed that something was different.

He mustered his courage and looked up at Huo Yao.
