After Mrs. Cheng fell asleep, Cheng Qingchong walked out from her mother's room.
Qin Yinan was no longer in the living room. The lights were off, but the television was still on. The volume was lowered to the lowest, and the flickering light came from the LCD screen.
Since they were acting, they naturally had to share the same room. Furthermore, Qin Yinan's apartment had three bedrooms and one living room. Qin Yinan only had two bedrooms, and the last one was a study. Her mother slept in one bedroom, so there was only the master bedroom left.
The light in the study was off, so Cheng Qingchong knew Qin Yinan was in the master bedroom.
She stood at the door for a long time before pushing it open lightly and walking in.
Qin Yinan was already done with his shower. His hair was still wet, and he was leaning against the headboard, flipping through some documents. When he heard the door open, he raised his eyes slightly to look at it.
Meeting his gaze, Cheng Qingchong lowered her head nervously. She closed the door softly behind her. She didn't want to disturb Qin Yinan as she walked toward the bathroom with light steps.
When Cheng Qingchong came out from the bathroom, Qin Yinan was still busy.
Afraid that she might interrupt his work, she grabbed the hairdryer and snuck out of the bedroom to the kitchen, which was furthest away from the master bedroom. She connected the hairdryer and started to blow-dry her hair.
When Cheng Qingchong returned to the bedroom, Qin Yinan had replaced the documents in his hands with his laptop. His head was tilted to the side, and his phone was stuck between his neck and his face. As he spoke, he was typing on the keyboard. From the conversation, Cheng Qingchong could guess that he was sending an email.
She placed the hairdryer back in the bathroom cupboard and combed her hair in front of the mirror before leaving the bathroom. She sat on the sofa and lowered her head to look at her phone like it was empty air.
The bedroom was quiet. Other than Qin Yinan's intermittent typing, the only other sound was his low voice.
His tone was gentle, and it made Cheng Qingchong's heart skip a beat.
Cheng Qingchong, who was reading the novel on her phone, slowly moved her attention to Qin Yinan's voice. Her head snuck toward the mirror beside her, and she stared at Qin Yinan through the reflection.
After about ten minutes, Qin Yinan hung up. Afraid that Qin Yinan might realize she was looking at him, Cheng Qingchong quickly pulled her gaze away and lowered her head to look at her phone.
After hanging up the phone, Qin Yinan only typed a few times on the keyboard before he stopped.
The bedroom became even quieter. Qin Yinan stared at the computer screen for about a minute before glancing at the clock on the top right corner. It was already 11 am. He raised his eyes to glance at the girl sitting motionlessly on the sofa. After a few seconds, he closed the computer, got out of bed, and went to the bathroom. When he came out, he turned off the lights in the room and looked like he was going to sleep.
As the light in the bedroom dimmed, Cheng Qingchong came back to herself. She raised her head to look at Qin Yinan with the help of the dim bedside lamp. "You're done with your work?"
Without Mrs. Cheng, the warmth and gentleness that Mrs. Cheng had around Qin Yinan was gone. When he heard Cheng Qingchong's voice, he glanced at her and replied with a neutral "hmm".
Cheng Qingchong gripped her phone, and after some thought, she opened her mouth to say what she had wanted to say that night. "Thank you."
Even if it was just an act, she should still thank him.
At the very least, he made her mother feel at ease, thinking that she had married into a good family and was living a good life.
