"I just wanted to see if your fever had subsided, so you don't have to look at me so cautiously," he explained. In the next second, he paused and placed his palm on her forehead. His other hand was on his own head.
A few seconds later, he retracted his hand and let out a sigh of relief. "I'm fine."
Jiang Yao knew that he must have found out about her fever over the phone and rushed all the way back from the county's train station. Perhaps he got off the train in town and ran all the way home. His palms were wet with sweat, and his temperature was so hot that it seemed like it could burn her forehead.
She asked herself, Jiang Yao, was your heart made of iron in the past? Or did you never have a heart? How could you bear to run away from Lu Xingzhi like this? How could you bear to torture him with emotional abuse for eleven years?
"Lu Xingzhi …" Jiang Yao softly called his name. After a few seconds of silence, she suddenly reached out and hugged the person in front of her.
Lu Xingzhi could be described as dumbstruck when someone suddenly crashed into his arms. He froze on the spot and straightened his back, allowing Jiang Yao to hug him. His hands instinctively reached out to support her waist, but he stopped abruptly.
At that moment, the Congo Lu Xingzhi felt like he was facing a formidable enemy, but he didn't know how to deal with it.
"Did you suffer at home?" The two of them had been married for a year, but Lu Xingzhi had never been hugged by Jiang Yao, let alone relied on by her. He could feel that she was always drifting away from this marriage, as if she was outside of it.
Therefore, when she hugged him in such a manner, his subconscious reaction was to wonder if she was unhappy in this house. Did she suffer because there was no one to protect her when he wasn't at home?
"Did you quarrel with mom?" Lu Xingzhi asked softly.
His worries were unfounded. When he had insisted on marrying Jiang Yao, Mother Lu had been very angry. She had always complained that Jiang Yao was too young. During the time after their marriage, Jiang Yao had been cold to him, and Mother Lu was full of resentment.
"You probably don't know mom's temper too well. She has a sharp tongue but a soft heart. When she nags you, just let it go in one ear and out the other. I'll talk to mom later and ask her not to make things difficult for you." Lu Xingzhi's temper wasn't very good, probably because he had given all his patience to the woman in his arms.
"No." Jiang Yao denied it.
Although Mother Lu, Li Guizhi, didn't like her daughter-in-law very much, she never made things difficult for her.
"What's wrong?" Jiang Yao opened her mouth to answer. Lu Xingzhi's brows relaxed slightly. Since she was talking to him, it meant that he wasn't the one who made her unhappy.
Jiang Yao then let go of Lu Xingzhi. Looking at his uncomfortable appearance, she smiled bitterly in her heart. She didn't know how much of a jerk she had been in the past to make him feel so flattered that he doubted himself just because she hugged him for shelter.
Jiang Yao remembered the young soldier saying that when he had nothing to do in the army, he would always go to the village to visit her. But she hadn't seen him in two years.
