Report

Bakelite record, also known as "vinyl record" (English Standard Playing Record, 78rpmRecord, referred to as SP) refers to a phonograph record with a rotational speed of 78 revolutions per minute, a sound groove width of 0.10-0.16 mm, and a sound groove density of 30-50 lines per cm.

Bakelite record is what most people call the records that used to be played on a turntable. This record is a black disc-shaped film, pressed with resin (commonly known as bakelite, later changed to polyvinyl chloride, or PVC), engraved with bumps and grooves to record the sound.

Early Bakelite records only had a single channel, and later developed into a two-track two-channel sound track. By the late 1980s, the color of these records was no longer limited to black, but could be white, orange, transparent, fluorescent, and even the singer's appearance could be printed on the record, but the cost was higher. Because of the later 33 rpm record (LP), the channel density was lower, and the playing time was much shorter, it was also known as "rough record."

Rough record can be played with a steel needle (early hand-cranked phonograph) and a rough gem stylus (electric phonograph), but the stylus and the record can't be used. Vinyl record was the dominant music format in the 20th century. From your 78 year old grandmother to a 45 year old single, vinyl is perfect for all age groups because it's audibly more authentic and cheaper. Although vinyl is still used by DJs and radio stations, it has been relegated to garage disposal. Vinyl record, also known as LP, long play, is a stereo black celluloid texture record.

Why is it called LP, mainly in reference to the old rough record of the past. This is a simple explanation.

LP and SP

Starting in 1948, 33 1/3 rpm records were released. After a few years of development, the recording time on one side was nearly 30 minutes, much longer than before, so it was called long play. In contrast, with the state of technology at the time, there was the so-called "SP", or Standard Play, which was 78 rpm. Now the popular records are almost all 33 rpm, so vinyl records are directly called "LP."

Common specifications

10 ": Short recording time, usually only one song can be recorded 12": Longer recording time, up to 5 minutes, also standard stereo LP format.

33 1/3 rpm: LP record, each side can record about 6 songs; 45 rpm: EP record, each side can only record one song; 78 rpm: SP record, each side can record about 4 minutes; Vinyl record, as a medium of sound and music, occupied almost the entire 20th century, until the birth of the CD in 1984. China entered the CD era in 1992, and the vinyl production line was largely eliminated. The price of vinyl records dropped from about 30 yuan to about 15 yuan. However, due to the preferences of collectors, the price of vinyl records gradually rose from 1994 onwards, and by 1996, it had exceeded 100 yuan.

In 1998, the last domestic vinyl production line was closed. At present, vinyl records in the domestic market are imported from overseas or second-hand. Now in Guangzhou's Tao Street, the cheapest vinyl record costs 60 to 70 yuan, and the collector's edition can cost more than a thousand. This was why Tangleh wanted to collect it. Do vinyl records have to be black?

Vinyl records, also known as "Bakelite records." The reason why people call it vinyl records may be because most Bakelite records are black, but there are also other colors of vinyl records, such as yellow, transparent, fluorescent, white, and at the same time, the singer's photo can be printed on the record, but the cost is higher. For example, Leslie Cheung once released a Bakelite record called "Standard Up," which was released in three colors: yellow, purple, and green.

2. Is there a special material for vinyl records?

The first generation of records and for a long time after, they were made of shellac. However, due to the problems of shellac's water resistance and durability, it was gradually replaced by synthetic plastics.

At the same time, there are also paper vinyl records.

3. Can vinyl records only be round?

No. Vinyl records also have square, pentagram, and fan shapes. It doesn't matter what the shape of the record is made, but the lines of the record must be round.

4. What should I pay attention to when placing vinyl records?

It should be placed vertically and pressed tightly to prevent deformation. The place should be ventilated and dry to prevent mold. After listening to the record, the dust on the surface should be wiped off immediately. This shows that the maintenance of vinyl records needs to be skillful. Compared to today's CD, vinyl records. CD uses a binary numeric 01 recording method, which determines that the content recorded has an essential difference from the analog recording master tape. Compared with the master tape, the amount of information in any recording is inevitable. Just like a model and her portrait, no matter how realistic the painting is, it is just like the real thing, not the same thing.

Vinyl records basically use the analog recording form, and the content recorded by the analog recording master tape is the same, the difference is the master tape and equipment transmission loss in the transcription process. It is like a person in the same posture at different times, it is a real reproduction.

The replacement of vinyl records by CD lies in the law of commercial society. The cost of producing CD is estimated to be a few cents of plastic, and the transport volume is small, it can be sold for a few tens of yuan, and the disc will not jump the cord even if it is damaged. The amazing profit and consumer acceptance and affordability are obvious. In the mass production of vinyl records, the copper mold alone already costs a few yuan per disc, not to mention the cost of polyethylene raw materials. The transport is heavy and takes up space, and it is easy to damage the cord if it is not well preserved. If it is sold for a few tens of yuan, I am afraid that the profit is not big, and the consumer's desire to buy is not high. In contrast, vinyl is bound to be replaced by CD in the mainstream market.

Playing with LP requires patience, because listening to LP requires a lot of preparation, and it is very troublesome. LP will force you to slow down the pace of life, to listen to one song at a time, not as convenient as CD, so you will listen to the music carefully. The fun of playing with LP vinyl records is like knowing the temperature of water.

The basic movements and necessary equipment before listening must be known, and pay attention to the record dust, cleaning the stylus, and other maintenance procedures that require patience. When buying a second-hand LP, it is necessary to check whether there are scratches, especially a set that contains several LPs, and look at them one by one. Because you can listen to it, it is best to listen carefully if there is enough time.
