At that moment, a middle-aged man walked into the ward with a boy who was about three years old.
The boy was holding a toy pistol and was dubbing the gun nonstop, making noises that sounded like those in a movie.
May raised her hand. "Ben, come here."
She then turned to Luke and Selina and said, "This is Benjamin, my husband."
Luke and Selina shook hands with Benjamin with a smile.
Benjamin was a very good person, and he was sincere. After a few polite words, he expressed his gratitude solemnly.
Luke said with a smile, "Actually, I admire May very much. She wasn't afraid even when she was faced with four criminals. "
Benjamin smiled bitterly. "Thank you. I'd rather it was me who ran into this."
Looking at his face, Luke said with a smile, "No, it's best if it doesn't happen again. You're not a police officer, and it's not your duty to subdue criminals."
The four of them chatted for a while, when the boy suddenly asked Luke, "Are you a police officer?"
Luke nodded with a smile. "Yes."
"Were you the one who saved May?" the boy asked again.
Pondering for a moment, Luke shook his head. "No, May saved a baby. I was just helping her deal with those bad guys."
The boy frowned. "So, May can beat up those bad guys too?" He was clearly doubtful about that.
Luke was amused. "At least, I think that's what she did."
The boy nodded. "When I grow up, I want to be a police officer too and help May beat up those bad guys."
Everybody looked at each other and couldn't help but laugh.
Luke rubbed the boy's head. "Is this your son? He's very cute. "
May chuckled. "He's … our child. He's living with us now."
Looking at May and Benjamin's expressions, Luke vaguely understood something.
He immediately changed the subject and asked, "Huh, what's his name?"
Benjamin said, "His name is Peter."
Luke laughed. "Haha, he's a smart kid."
After chatting for a moment, Luke and Selina got up and said goodbye.
Peter followed Benjamin and waved goodbye at them at the door of the ward.
After they left the ward, Luke went to the front desk and checked May's medical bills with his badge.
Looking at the numbers, he asked, "Have they paid all the bills?"
The receptionist shook her head. "They only paid the initial fee."
Luke thought for a moment, then called Jenny and gave her a few instructions before hanging up.
After leaving the hospital and getting into the car, Selina asked curiously, "Why are you paying for her medical bills?"
Luke thought for a moment before he replied, "Because … she's beautiful and kind?"
Selina scoffed. "She's beautiful, but she's already 39 years old! However, a thirty-nine-year-old woman actually looks like she's in her twenties. How many women would be jealous of her? "
Luke nodded in affirmation. "So, the beautiful and kind people in this world deserve help."
Selina heard his nonsense and didn't pursue the matter. She just rolled her eyes at him.
Under normal circumstances, when a man said that a woman was beautiful and kind, the underlying meaning was that this woman was easy to deceive.
Using a phrase from his previous life to describe her, it would be 'naive and naive'.
Luke called Jenny and asked her to find an excuse to make a charity donation in the name of Cosmic Cube to help pay May's medical bills.
From what Luke could observe, he knew that May's family wasn't very well off financially. They might be able to pay the medical bills, but it would definitely be hard for them to make ends meet.
Commercial insurance, on the other hand, could play a lot of tricks when it came to medical treatment. For example, the insurance company could request that the patient be treated by a doctor on their list. If they wanted to find a more expensive specialist, they would have to get a referral from a doctor who was connected to the insurance company, or the insurance company might refuse to pay.
May's injury had been an accident. Even if the insurance company didn't refuse to pay, it would still be troublesome when and how much money they could pay.
Luke didn't want May, a kind woman, to be caught in such an awkward and troublesome situation just because she was doing a good deed.
In fact, it was mostly Mr. Smith who had caused May's injury.
Mr. Smith, on the other hand, had done Luke a huge favor by taking care of Councilman Henry, the pillar of the Elsworth family, and providing him with a very special ability.
Now, Luke was only helping May, who had been caught in the crossfire, in exchange for peace of mind.
Luke would never leave a knot in his heart when it came to something that could be solved with a little money.
Most of the time, the hardest person to convince was themselves.
They drove home, and received a call from Elizabeth, who told him that Chris had arrived.
Luke asked, and learned that they had arrived in the afternoon. So, he invited them to his place for dinner.
Elizabeth hesitated for a moment. "Is that okay?"
Luke chuckled. "No problem. I'm going to talk to Chris anyway."
Recalling Luke's earlier suggestion, Elizabeth agreed. "Okay, we're on our way."
Forty minutes later, two cars arrived at Luke's place.
Luke and Selina, who had been waiting at the gate, opened the gate and let the cars in.
They got out of the cars, and Luke gave the mature and charming sheriff a hug and a kiss. "Samantha, I'm so happy to see you again. You can stay for a few more days this time."
Elizabeth smiled bitterly in her heart. You probably don't know what kind of job Elsa found for you, do you? Stay for a few more days?
Luke hugged Ashley, then spun Mike around. "Haha. How have you been, entomologist?"
Mike struggled. "I'm fine. Don't treat me like a kid."
Luke put him down with a smile. "Okay. You should learn to take care of yourself and your mom."
It was finally Chris's turn. Luke shook his hand and patted his back. "You look good, Chris."
Chris simply smiled. "You too."
Luke lowered his head helplessly and picked up a black and white creature that was "viciously" tugging at his pants. "Wow, our hellhound! Mr. Bruce is getting better and better!"
Then … he pressed down on the little bean and rubbed it. After a few strokes, it became well-behaved.
Luke finally pulled out an arm and hugged Gladys, who was smiling. "I'm glad you're here, Gladys."
Gladys took Bruce back with a smile. "I'm glad, too. I'll take care of this naughty guy. "
Selina exchanged greetings with everybody, and they all went into the house.
A moment later, everybody moved to the back of the house, where it was bigger and more comfortable.
