In the winter morning after the snow, the sky was blue and deep. Pushing open the window, the biting cold air rushed in. As the saying goes, snow leaves no trace. Outside was a vast expanse of whiteness, there was no trace of anyone walking by. However, this did not mean that it was very safe. The snow could also bury evil deeds.
Mrs. Harris prepared breakfast as usual. The rich aroma of milk and oatmeal did not stimulate everyone's appetite. When Mr. Harris announced the arrangements for everyone at the table, Mrs. Harris could no longer remain calm. "No, Owen, my magic is very strong too. I can stay at home and face everything with you."
"Dad, I think a doctor can play a big role in a battle." Daisy also did not want to stand by and watch. She could not hide in a safe place and let her family face unpredictable danger.
An argument, or rather, a debate about love was about to begin. Allen filled a bowl with milk and oatmeal, took a plate of sandwiches, called Emily and went upstairs to Emily's room. He did not think that children should face their parents' arguments directly. It would cause harm to their young minds.
"Allen, why are mom and dad fighting?" Emily was a bit sad.
"Emily, because of some things that must be done, we have to be separated for a while. Although mom and dad are arguing, you have to believe that it is all because of love." Allen patiently reasoned with his sister.
"We have to be separated?" Emily was a bit scared.
"I will be with you." Allen continued to comfort Emily. Hearing that the downstairs had calmed down, Allen pulled the luggage that he had just packed and went to the living room with Emily. They were going to fly to Aunt Josephine's house.
When Mr. Harris handed over his children to Josephine, he was very reluctant to part with them. "We will follow the original plan. I hope everything goes well. Allen, take care of your sister. "Mr. Harris hugged his children and turned to leave.
Aunt Josephine was a stout witch with red cheeks and piercing blue eyes. She wore a dark purple dress, a black silk cloak with black tassels, and a black bonnet with purple velvet flowers that quivered when she turned her head.
"Oh my god, what a cute child." Aunt Josephine picked up Emily. Emily looked at her brother helplessly. Seeing Allen's encouraging smile, she shyly leaned on Josephine's shoulder.
"Have you had breakfast?" Aunt Josephine led the children to unpack their luggage when they answered affirmatively.
This was probably an old and declining manor. Aunt Josephine led them away from the living room with the huge fireplace and into the hallway. It was a long corridor, branching off into other passages, and they followed one of them to a flight of stairs that led upwards. These stairs lead to one another. There were doors on both sides of the hallway, most of which were locked. There were many paintings hanging on the walls. Some of them were eerie and strange landscapes, but most of them were portraits of men and women. The people in the paintings were dressed in fancy clothes made of silk and velvet. Allen walked slowly and stared at the faces in the paintings. The faces stared back at him. Allen finally noticed something was wrong. Unlike the murals in Hogwarts, these people could move freely, but they were all silent and abnormally quiet. Emily couldn't help but lean closer to her brother. This kind of scene was indeed shocking for a young girl.
They stopped in front of a door with a portrait of a little girl. The little girl was wearing a red dress with gold and silver embroidery. She was holding a dark green toad in her hand. Her face was expressionless, but her eyes were sharp and curious.
"Miss Clark, these two children will need to stay here for a few nights. I hope you can allow it." Aunt Josephine actually bowed to the girl in the painting.
The toad in the little girl's hand jumped and left the painting. Not long after, the girl also left the painting frame. "It's done." Aunt Josephine pushed lightly and the huge door slowly and heavily opened. After opening the door, what came into view was a huge bedroom. Embroidered ornaments hung on the wall, and clear wooden furniture filled the room. There was a wide window inlaid with large pieces of colored glass. Outside the window, there was a vast expanse of white wilderness covered with thick snowflakes. A large bed covered in a thick blanket was placed in front of an old painting. The contents of the painting were hard to discern, but at a glance, it felt strange and unpredictable.
"Don't worry. Although this place looks eerie, it's the safest place," Aunt Josephine explained as if she was worried about the two children's fear.
"Thank you, Auntie. Don't worry, we can take care of ourselves." Allen bowed in gratitude.
"Okay, then you two should rest first. I'll call you for lunch later. If you're bored, there's the library next door. You can go take a look. I remember there are many children's books that Miss Clark has read. "Aunt Josephine touched Emily's head again and turned to leave.
Allen unpacked his luggage and neatly hung his clothes in the oak wardrobe while thinking about how he could escape to find Albert. If only he was an adult. At least he could move freely and not be restrained by age.
Allen quickly found this opportunity. There was nothing suitable for Emily to play in this room. Allen took Emily to the library next door. This room looked like it was not normally used. All the books were neatly placed on the shelves. Probably because Aunt Josephine had used "Clean Up", the room was clean without a single speck of dust. Emily happily played in front of a small children's bookshelf. She took out all the books inside and stacked them up high. She clapped her hands happily. The books stacked higher and higher until they slowly tilted. When Emily put a thick fairy tale book on top, they suddenly collapsed and fell toward Emily. Allen quickly rushed over to carry Emily away, but he accidentally knocked over the children's bookshelf. The bookshelf hit the wall behind it, and a part of the wall was dented. Allen lifted the bookshelf and lifted the wall. Behind the wall was a narrow staircase tunnel. Allen was very curious, but Emily was beside him. He couldn't ignore her and explore.
