Like a whirlwind, the army swarmed into Crushed Stone City.
Zhao Lie found an open space outside of the city and set up camp in a place that would definitely not be affected by the collapse of the skyscrapers. He arranged a lot of shuttles in a circle, supplemented by barricades, iron plates, and sentry towers for observation and shooting, and built a rather solid base camp.
Then, he sent out scouts and snipers to explore the city area to make sure that there were no "powerful dragons" from the Bloody Worlds lurking near him. He also occupied the commanding heights near the base camp. Dozens of firing points were set up at different heights in a well-spaced pattern, ensuring that the firepower could be spread out to the maximum extent.
A lot of landmines and crystal bombs had also been planted on the two sides of the main road leading to the base camp. Should anyone intend to attack the base camp of the Village of Peace, they would certainly be butchered mercilessly.
Li Yao even saw him commanding a lot of muscular men to establish bizarre-shaped machines of iron structures near the base camp. Judging from their appearance, they boasted enormous torque and looked like some sort of siege weapons from the medieval era, but there was no telling what they were for.
Seeing that Zhao Lie commanded calmly and orderly, Li Yao could not help but compliment him in his heart. The tough bandit of the Bloody Worlds in the past and the captain of the exploration team of the Village of Peace today truly had his own expertise. No wonder he was able to win people's hearts, gather accomplices, and challenge 'Sky Breaking Hammer' Gu Zhengyang head-on.
The thousand people were busy for more than half a day. It was not until the sun gradually set in the west and the sky dimmed that they finally finished their work. Li Yao saw Zhao Chong and his' Iron Blood Youths'. Dozens of ferocious young men, however, were rushing forward on their single shuttles, spraying shocking crimson paint all over the main road of Broken Stone City, drawing a red line that was as intense as fire.
Every once in a while, an enormous iron rod would be smashed on the red line brutally. On the top of the iron rod was the skull of a mutated beast, on which the word 'Peace' was written.
The endless red line and skeletal iron rods divided Shattered Stone City into two areas. After the red line was drawn, there were rustling noises coming from the ruins. Countless people in ragged clothes and unkempt faces retreated from the red line unwillingly.
"The Village of Peace is the largest village in the hundreds of square kilometers nearby, and we have the largest number of experts. With my master and 'Blood Eagle' Zhao Lie, two experts, it is impossible for other people to compete with us."
Han Te explained to Li Yao in a low voice, "If we are determined to annihilate them, we can loot all the assets without leaving a single nail for other villages. However, that would be too cruel.
"Therefore, my master made a rule that before every Bliss Ceremony, a red line would be drawn at the landing spot of the assets. The items within the red line would belong to us, and nobody was allowed to come in and take them. The items outside the red line would belong to other villages. No matter how hard you fought, we would not go out and loot you.
"In such a way, we would mind our own business. Everybody would have a chance to survive."
Li Yao thought of something. It was indeed a good way to reduce the casualties. However, he asked, "Did the other villages listen to your master so obediently?"
Han Te smiled. "Of course not at first. When my master drew the red line for the first time, they even burst into laughter and regarded my master as a lunatic.
"However, whoever crossed the red line would taste my master's' Sky Breaking Hammer '. After decades, no village dared to cross the red line anymore.
"Naturally, when the world was spinning and everyone was dizzy, it was inevitable that some blind guys would cross the line. In the past, when my master was in charge, he would simply beat them up and throw them back. This year, 'Blood Eagle' Zhao Lie was in full command. Let's hope that the guy … doesn't cause any trouble!"
Li Yao focused his soul and scanned Zhao Lie's direction.
The ruthless and decisive bandit in the past was standing on a watchtower. His eyebrows were furrowed as he stared at the depths of the city ruins with a worried expression.
Li Yao's telepathic thoughts spread out like a tide. Soon, he passed the red line on the main road and moved toward the depths of the city ruins. As he expected, he discovered that countless sinners from other villages were lurking in the broken walls and the dark corners.
Compared to the villagers of the Village of Peace, the sinners from the smaller villages were more like highly mutated animals that had been exposed to radiation.
Their equipment was thinner, and their bodies were thinner and hunchbacked. Almost all of them were dirty, with lumps of tumors and scabies growing on their skin. With fear and hatred beaming out of their eyes, they stared at the red line as well as the people of the Village of Peace on the other side of the red line.
Li Yao could sense a very intense aura from them, an aura of destruction that suggested that they would do anything for survival and would even die together with anybody when their hope of survival was gone.
Even though Li Yao was an expert who had seen a lot of things in the sea of stars, ripples were still raised deep inside his soul by the beast-like aura of the sinners.
Perhaps, Zhao Lie's philosophy was correct. Those who attacked first would gain the upper hand, and those who attacked later would suffer. In the Land of Sins, there was no difference between civilians and bandits, villains and the innocent, and humans and animals.
If you did not kill him, he would eat you!
Night fell. Stinky wind was blowing everywhere. On the Land of Sins that had been contaminated by radiation, colorful ghostly fire was flashing everywhere, like countless ghosts dancing in the wind. They were grinning gloomily in midair, enjoying the dogfight that was about to take place.
It was a starless night. The only thing that could be vaguely seen was the weird fluorescence of the Heavenly Rails, which looked like giant serpents that had tied up the entire planet.
Right then, the giant serpents slowly opened their eyes, which emitted the most glamorous, vicious, and glamorous redness.
"Look … Look, Manjusaka!"
At that moment, all the sinners lurking in the ruins of the city seemed to have forgotten their destiny. They all opened their hands and tried to reach the sky, as if their broken and twisted fingers could touch the unpredictable brilliance of the City in the Sky.
Manjusaka, the legendary Flower of the Other Shore that could make people walk into the deepest level of hell when they were at the peak of ecstasy, blossomed slowly in the dark sky above the Land of Sins. The crimson brilliance soaked the entire Land of Sins in an ocean of blood.
Hum … Hum … Hum … Hum …
In the faintly glowing ruins of the city, indistinct and restless chanting could be heard from all directions. It was the priests in the various villages who were all using their own spells to beg the Celestial Being to be merciful and grant them more good luck.
"Look! Look!"
There was no telling how long they chanted. When the Flower of the Other Shore blossomed to the maximum and the redness was as intense as blood, hundreds of pale, dead fish eyes seemed to have opened in the deep night sky at the same time and stared at the Land of Sins and the sinners. They were the parachutes that carried tremendous assets and the hope of survival for the next year.
The chanting deep inside the ruins turned into heart-wrenching howls. The essence of the civilization of mankind in the past turned into lifeless remains and skeletons at first, and then into a naked jungle of slaughter. Everybody had turned into the most ferocious beasts.
The parachutes floating in the night sky symbolized both hope and death!
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Hiu! Hiu! Hiu!
Li Yao noticed that the dozens of 'siege machines' that looked like trebuchets in the headquarters of the Village of Peace had all been tightened to the maximum. A fully-armed, muscular man was crouching on the rails of every trebuchet. With thunderous noises, they were all launched into the sky like cannonballs.
All the muscular men were carrying an enormous metal backpack. When the impact of their flight to the sky was exhausted and they were about to fall, powerful air currents spurted out of the backpacks and unfolded four crossed metal wings, allowing them to continue ascending and approaching the parachutes.
In the meantime, a lot of muscular men with wings on their backs were ejected from the ruins of the city beyond the red line. Like flying men, they staggered toward the parachutes.
Shua! Shua! Shua!
They were experts at manipulating wind and air currents. Like skillful surfers, they made use of the turbulence in the air cleverly and landed next to the parachutes softly.
Their wings were as thin as the wings of cicadas, but their edges were extremely sharp. They cut the ropes of the parachutes softly and tilted the parachutes to one side.
After every rope of the parachute was cut and the parachutes fell toward their destination, cheers that sounded like howls of wolves would burst out on the ground.
"They are all members of the Flying Wing Army."
Han Te explained to Li Yao, "Because we have only drawn the red lines on the ground and cannot distinguish the territory of the forces in the sky, every village has a batch of elites who will fly to the sky in advance and control the direction of the parachutes precisely so that they will land in their territory. Then, the assets will be in their hands for sure!"
More and more members of the Flying Wing Army flew into the sky. The parachutes whose ropes had been cut were very difficult to control, and they were likely to collide with each other when the wind changed direction.
The members of the Flying Wing Army that belonged to different villages had soul-stirring battles in midair. Now and then, somebody's wings were chopped off and kicked down, raising dull noises and dust on the ground.
The larger the parachute, the heavier the assets inside. The few largest parachutes soon became everybody's target.
Some of the members of the Flying Wing Army, in order to be the first to grab the largest parachute, flew higher and higher without caring about anything and approached the 'Heavenly Rails'.
At that moment, the Heavenly Rails suddenly glittered, as if a giant python had finally revealed its hideous face. Bolts of lightning flashed across the night sky, baring their fangs and brandishing their claws, instantly electrifying the Winged Army that touched the dome of the sky. They were torn into pieces and fell to the ground.
"They are too close to the sky."
