Eighty lightyears away from the Uranian Ring Sector, a peripheral world of the Xing Yao Federation, in an unknown space zone in the deep sea of stars, behind a brown dwarf … [Love ↑ Go △ Little ↑ Say △ w

The universe was a vast place with infinite stars. If a sphere with a radius of a hundred lightyears was drawn with the seven Sectors of the Xing Yao Federation as the center, more than five thousand star systems would be included in the seven spheres. Most of them were desolate worlds without spiritual energy or vitality.

Even though the Xing Yao Federation had been launching unmanned mini exploration starships and highly-sensitive space torpedoes to the desolate worlds every year, every month, and every day in the past hundred years, trying to establish a solid defense line, or at least a 'national border', within two hundred lightyears around the federation, the five thousand desolate worlds were still far from being filled.

Around the five thousand stars, there were still a lot of dark space zones that the federation had yet to detect and monitor. The so-called 'national border' was nothing more than an illusory thing that was full of holes. It was nothing more than psychological comfort.

The 'stars', on the other hand, were at least large celestial bodies that the Star Prier's House, the largest space monitoring station of the Federation located on Spider Den, could monitor and lock onto.

Brown dwarfs, on the other hand, were one level lower than stars.

Brown dwarfs were gaseous celestial bodies that were similar to stars but were not massive enough to ignite fusion reactions at their cores. Their mass was between the smallest stars and the largest planets. Therefore, they were very dim and were also known as' failed stars'.

Because of their insufficient mass, they could not become burning stars. Therefore, it was very difficult for them to release spiritual waves that could be detected by any space monitoring station of the Federation or the Star Prier's House.

According to the analysis of the astronomers of the Federation, it was very likely that there were at least three thousand brown dwarfs within a radius of a hundred lightyears around the major worlds of the Federation. But so far, the Federation had discovered and named no more than five hundred brown dwarfs.

There were still two thousand five hundred brown dwarfs. Like invisible eyeballs, they were slowly rotating and drifting in the dark, cold, unknown space zones.

Although it was extremely difficult for the Federation to explore and develop these brown dwarfs from a hundred light years away, some of them could still release extremely high temperatures when they were close at hand.

The temperature could be transformed into feeble energy that could provide a brief rest for a fleet that had just arrived after a long journey. It would not be so violent that it would interfere with the units of the fleet that had been highly worn during the hundred years of sailing. It could also slightly cover the spiritual waves that the fleet released when it was resting, maintaining, unfolding, and establishing the array of star beacons on a large scale.

Even if they were detected by the Federation's space monitoring station, they would think that the fleet was just a part of the brown dwarf.

The Black Wind Fleet had been in the orbit of the brown dwarf for seven years.

A space expedition was not something that could be accomplished overnight. When the Black Wind Fleet set off a hundred years ago, the greatest enemy that they were faced with was the unknown universe and the passage of time itself.

At that time, they only had a short, incomplete set of coordinates of the Flying Star Sector in their hands. If they were to jump based on the incomplete set of coordinates, 99% of them would have jumped to an unknown, desolate world that was not recorded on the star map at all. It would have been equivalent to falling into the swirl of space. It would have been very difficult for them to jump out again without consuming tremendous resources. Even if they did jump out, it was very likely that they would end up in a second, unknown, desolate world.

As it happened, the Imperium of True Human Beings had not expanded to the Flying Star Sector in the past thousand years.

Therefore, the Black Wind Fleet, which had suffered defeats in the frontline, lost its nest, and ended up as a lone troop, but was unwilling to be absorbed by other Sectors, accepted the glorious and arduous mission to expand the territory of the Imperium and consolidate the rear.

Their mission was not just to explore and conquer the Flying Star Sector but also to explore all the unknown space zones between the homeland of the Imperium at the center of the cosmos and the Flying Star Sector. In the era of the 'old Star Ocean Imperium', the Sectors recorded on the history books and the star maps were the 'prey' that they had to look for.

Therefore, the Black Wind Fleet was not in a hurry to jump to the coordinates of the Flying Star Sector that the star child had released in the past through a super long-distance space jump. [Love ↑ Go △ Little ↑ Say △ w]

Considering the complexity of a space jump and the cost of spiritual energy consumption, every time the distance of a space jump was doubled, the amount of spiritual energy and resources consumed would be doubled. As a lone troop, the Black Wind Fleet, which clearly could not receive more supplies and reinforcements from the base, would certainly not perform a super long-distance space jump recklessly.

What they chose was a tactic known as' star leapfrogging '. The distance of every short-distance jump was no more than a hundred lightyears. Usually, it was within ten to fifty lightyears. After every jump, they would find the most suitable star. While exploring whether or not there were habitable planets and civilizations around the star, they would drop special' star bombs' on the star.

With the technology and magical equipment of the Imperium of True Human Beings, it was unlikely that they could destroy a star directly. The purpose of such 'star bombs' was not to destroy but to activate a specific area of the star so that they could provide spiritual energy for their next jump.

After the exploration around the star was completed, all the parameters and coordinates were recorded into the star map for updating, and large-scale star beacons were established near the local stable planets, it would be very convenient for other fleets to travel between those space zones and the homeland of the Imperium in the future. It also meant that those space zones would be included in the 'territory' of the Imperium.

By then, they would have collected enough energy. So, they would perform a new 'star leapfrogging' and repeat the previous process.

Therefore, during the hundred years, they had been exploring, recording, and building nonstop. It was not until ten years ago that they finally reached the edge of the cosmos.

The Black Wind Fleet had been rather unlucky in the past hundred years.

They did not find many habitable planets that were worth developing.

Even the worlds of human beings that once boasted prosperous civilizations according to the records and the star maps left by the Star Ocean Imperium had often collapsed after they found them at the cost of tremendous resources. All the spiritual energy in the worlds had been drained, and the so-called civilizations were nothing but ruins. Even though some primitive barbarians were struggling to survive in the desolate worlds where spiritual energy had run dry, they could not make up for the resources that the Black Wind Fleet had consumed in searching for them.

Resources! Resources! Resources! Resources were the most precious things in the sea of stars!

Civilization! Civilization! Civilization was the most vulnerable existence in the cold universe!

After a couple of disappointments, the Black Wind Fleet was in an extremely awkward situation.

It was true that they had 'developed' a lot of new territories for the Imperium on the surface, but they were all the desolate worlds that were of the lowest evaluation and barely worth anything.

In the sea of stars, the most worthless things were the so-called 'territories'. Looking at the starry sky, one would see billions of stars and infinite territories. Theoretically speaking, they all boasted abundant resources and high value. For the worlds that had no intelligent creatures since the beginning of time, as long as a national flag was planted, a national anthem was sung, and a star beacon was built next to them, they would be declared as the territory of the Imperium.

However, such 'territories' were absolutely meaningless. However valuable they were 'theoretically', the Imperium had to be capable of developing them on a large scale at a reasonable cost!

Even if a certain world claimed to boast ten thousand points of resources, if the Imperium had to spend twenty thousand points of resources to develop it, what was the use of such a world at all?

That was not counting the construction and maintenance of the star beacons and the additional management costs and the defense costs of the supply lines that the Imperium had to incur in order to govern the world. The unpredictable assault fleets of the Holy League were certainly not easy to deal with!

Unfortunately, the Black Wind Fleet had barely discovered any such worlds in the past hundred years.

The space zones that they discovered were mostly worlds where 'Well, theoretically speaking, it is possible to find ten thousand points of resources after a deep exploration, but the cost of exploration is five thousand points of resources, and the cost of subsequent development is estimated to be ten thousand to a hundred thousand points of resources'.

Such worlds could not be exchanged for many contribution points for the Black Wind Fleet at all.

Without contribution points and a nest of their own, it meant that the Black Wind Fleet could not get more supplies and brand-new warships from other worlds of the Imperium. It also meant that if they returned in disgrace, they would only be swallowed and absorbed by other people, or they would be sent to the most dangerous frontline to fight the Holy League.

Naturally, the people of the Black Wind Fleet were unwilling to choose either option.

They continued marching toward the deep space with all their might!

Right then, they received the news that a claw fleet had been annihilated. They also learned that there was a regional superpower at the edge of the cosmos. They even found the last 'floating territory' of the government-in-exile of the Star Ocean Republic that had been lost for a thousand years!

The misfortune of a hundred years was reversed, but opportunities and challenges still coexisted.

The good news was that the prey in front of their eyes was fat enough. As long as they swallowed the prey that called itself 'Xing Yao Federation', the capability of the Black Wind Fleet would be multiplied by at least five times. Even if they returned to the center of the cosmos, they would still be strong enough to compete with everybody, including the emperor and the warlords.

The bad news was that the prey seemed to be too fat. What was hidden below the enormous body was not just fat but also strong muscles, solid bones, and sharp claws and teeth.

The Black Wind Fleet, who was caught in a dilemma, had two choices at this moment.

They could establish a large array of star beacons in this place and establish a splendid space gate, reporting the intelligence in this place to the homeland of the Imperium and the greedy emperor and the warlords so that they could summon reinforcements from the homeland.

Of course, establishing and activating the space gate and maintaining it at a very high level of teleportation would further consume the war resources of the Black Wind Fleet and weaken their combat ability. They would be in a passive position in the game of dividing the prey.

Or …

They could do it themselves! They could swallow the behemoth that was the Federation on their own and swallow all the benefits! (To be continued.)
