The third day.
The army had officially entered the wilderness. The scouts that were sent out brought back a lot of information, and the scattered adventurers had also more or less obtained some loot. Previously, many caravans had been attacked and robbed, and their belongings had fallen into the hands of the wild creatures. After a few battles, they were seized as spoils of war. Søren killed a few enemies one after another, and he had accumulated 3000 Slaughter EXP. However, the two of them didn't get much Kindler EXP.
"There's a village up ahead." Søren looked at the familiar path and said to the half-elf Ranger beside him, "I passed by here a while ago and it was attacked by the lizardmen. I don't know if they moved, but it should have become a gathering place for the lizardmen."
If they didn't move, then the people in the village would probably all be dead, right?
He gestured to Yass, and the two of them bent down and walked along the grass. There was a small river next to the village, and the lizardmen liked to be close to water sources. When they could see the wooden fence of the village in the distance, the half-elf Ranger took out a cylinder from his pocket and spun it a bit, then put it in front of him to observe.
A monocular?
Søren stopped and waited for the other party to see the results.
"It seems to have been occupied by the lizardmen." Yass handed the monocular to Søren and said casually, "This is an alchemy gadget, 10 Kindler each."
Glass was a relatively common material, but pure glass was very troublesome to make.
The monocular was an alchemy gadget. If it wasn't enchanted with magic runes, then it would be worth around 10 Kindler each. If it was enchanted with some special effects, then the price could be as high as several hundred Kindler each. Søren picked up the monocular and observed for a while. He easily saw the figures of the lizardmen guards on the watchtower. The village had been destroyed a lot, and the lizardmen had built many simple huts on top of the burned houses.
"There's a lot of them!" Søren put down the monocular and handed it back to Yass, then said in a deep voice, "The two of us probably won't be able to eat all of them. Let's go back and submit the information."
The Ranger nodded, put away the binoculars, and walked back.
When adventuring in the wilderness, one had to have at least a fifty percent chance of success before taking action. A seasoned adventurer like him would not easily attempt a difficult challenge. After all, he only had one life. If he died or was crippled, it would be useless even if he won. If you walk too much at night, you'll definitely encounter ghosts. If you take too many risks, you'll get yourself killed sooner or later. They couldn't run their corpses here. If they lost an arm or a leg in battle, they would have to pay a high price to recover.
The two of them quickly returned to the rear and handed in the information they had obtained.
Soon, a burly man who looked like a military officer came in front of them. He wore a full body armor, held a steel shield in his hand, and was equipped with a refined longsword, leather gloves, steel wrist guards, and a crossbow. Behind him was a group of fifty Whiterun City Guards. They were all equipped with iron-plated armor, iron shields, short swords, and light crossbows. Whiterun did not have many archers, but they had a lot of crossbowmen. Even the light infantry could be used as crossbowmen.
Other than that, there was also a gray-robed Sorcerer. He couldn't tell what his profession level was, but it should be at least rank 2.
"Captain of the 37th Whiterun City Guards, Hanks." The bearded Sorcerer nodded at Søren and said in a deep voice, "My superiors sent me to deal with those lizardmen."
Due to the frequent battles, the armies of this world could not afford to let their guard down.
Perhaps their discipline would deteriorate, and many of them would fall to the Evil Faction, but their combat power would not be reduced by much.
Hanks was a man of action. After gathering his men, he immediately asked Søren to lead the way. Most of the regular soldiers were advanced class holders, and most of them were at least rank 3. Hanks was probably at rank 2, but not higher than rank 3. As a soldier in the army, his equipment was better than most adventurers. Although he did not have any Rare-grade equipment, his armor was better than most low-grade Rare-grade equipment.
About an hour or two later.
The group returned to the village. Hanks ordered his men to take a rest, then turned to Søren and asked, "Can we take out their sentries?"
Søren and Yass nodded and moved in from the sides.
The Half-elf Ranger took out his longbow and made a gesture to the right. Then, he quietly climbed up a tree. The longbow had a long range, so he would be the one to deal with the sentries. Søren, on the other hand, hid in the shadows and snuck along the bushes. He also took out his crossbow as he needed to deal with the two lizardmen at the entrance.
The army was still hiding in the forest hundreds of meters away. Everyone was waiting quietly.
Sob! Sob!
The half-elf ranger killed the guards near the alarm bell, while Søren killed the sentries near the gate with his crossbow.
"Advance!"
When he saw the lizardmen on the arrow tower fall, Hanks immediately put on his helmet and wrapped himself up tightly. He said in a deep voice, "Wizard. Break the door! "
The wizard in the gray robe was obviously dissatisfied. He didn't like the way Hanks gave orders.
However, he still quickly chanted an incantation, and a half-ton golem appeared out of thin air. The golem moved forward with heavy steps. The Whiterun guards behind it spread out, raised their iron shields in front of them, and began to jog forward. The group moved quickly. When they were 150 meters away from the gate, the Whiterun guards covered their upper bodies with shields that were one meter long and half a meter wide. At the same time, they took out their light crossbows.
Sounds of panic could be heard in the village. The lizardmen quickly noticed the enemy's attack, and some of their archers immediately climbed up the arrow tower.
Boom! Boom!
Boom! More than ten arrows were fired, but the Whiterun guards didn't slow down at all. Their shields effectively blocked the enemy's attacks.
The golem, which wasn't small, didn't care about this level of damage at all. It walked at the front and smashed the gate with great force. Accompanied by a loud rumbling sound, the wooden gate of the stronghold was breached by the golems in less than a minute.
"Battle formation." Hanks raised his steel shield and slowed down his footsteps. He shouted, "White Horse Tactics."
The fifty-man guards were divided into ten small square formations. Three infantry soldiers raised their shields and drew their shortswords, and began to charge forward. The two soldiers at the back continued to reload their crossbows and shoot at the lizardmen in front of them. Hanks raised his shield and charged forward with a loud roar. Even though he was fully armored, he still reached the speed of a hundred-meter dash. He rushed into the village and sent a lizardman warrior flying with his sword.
The wizard stayed behind and didn't seem to have any intention of joining the fight. Even the golems remained where they were.
The Whiterun Guards quickly took down the gate. After killing three lizardmen in a row, Hanks retreated back into the infantry formation and shouted, "Reorganize the formation!"
The lizardmen fell one after another. The Whiterun guards raised their shields and steadily advanced, maintaining a tight square formation. They didn't chase after the enemy even though they were panicking or retreating. The light infantry with shields covered the flanks. They blocked with their shields and stabbed with their shortswords. The soldiers at the back continued to shoot with their crossbows. Occasionally, someone would be hit, but they would be quickly dragged to the back by their comrades. Hanks was also hit by a few arrows, but it didn't have any effect on his armor. He picked up his crossbow and fired back, then raised his shield to protect his head.
After the initial panic, the lizardmen warriors had already gathered.
The archers were much less effective against the lizardmen, who were equipped with iron scale armor and shields. The advanced lizardmen warriors at the back roared and charged forward.
"Defensive formation!" Hanks raised his steel shield and roared, "Charge! Shield Bash! "
The Whiterun guards on all sides began to gather. The light infantry also lowered their crossbows and raised their shields. They began to advance in a horizontal formation. When the lizardmen were only thirty meters away, everyone let out a roar and charged forward. These warriors used their shields to protect their front and directly rammed into the lizardmen that were charging at them.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
A series of muffled sounds reverberated in the air. The warriors covering the flanks began to shrink their formation. They formed a shield formation of ten men, and while they blocked the lizardmen's attacks, they stabbed the enemy with their shortswords. The lizardmen warriors fell like wheat being cut down. The damage from the shortswords wasn't enough to kill them. Many of the lizardmen were stabbed or knocked down. The shield warriors at the front continued to advance slowly. The light infantry at the back began to finish off the enemies who were still alive.
The fifty-man phalanx of warriors was like a city wall, blocking wave after wave of lizardmen's counterattacks.
There were already dozens of lizardmen corpses on the ground, but the fifty-man square formation still stood firm. Although three or four of them were injured and had to retreat, the formation didn't panic at all. They didn't retreat because of the enemy's fierce attacks, nor did they chase after the enemy. Like a wall, they slowly pushed the lizardmen in front of them into a corner of the village.
Søren's figure circled around from the side. The half-elf ranger quickly joined him. He pulled out his boning knife and looked behind him. "The Whiterun guards have been trained to use shields and shortswords since the beginning. The lizardmen's attacks won't be able to break through their square formation. We'll circle around from the side and find a way to kill the lizardmen's leader. "
"Hah!"
A loud shout came from behind. The fifty-man square formation roared at the same time. Every thirty steps forward, they would stop. Even though they only had one-third of the lizardmen's numbers, they were able to force the lizardmen back. Anyone who tried to attack them was either killed directly or shot to death by crossbow bolts. After every attack, the shield formation didn't waver at all. Only a dozen or so lizardmen corpses were left on the ground.
The number of archers was getting smaller and smaller. The light infantry, who were fully clad in scale armor and equipped with helmets and shields, could easily kill the lizardmen archers.
"Hand-axes!"
Perhaps it was because of the pressure, a very strong lizardman warrior roared and led a dozen or so of his kind to charge from the side. They wanted to break through the infantry square formation from the side where the defense was slightly weaker. Hanks also roared and took out a small, delicate hand-axe from his waist. It was less than twelve centimeters long. He spun it in his hand and threw it forward. Among the infantry square formation, there were also twenty or so well-trained warriors. They also took out hand-axes from their backs and threw them forward.
Bang bang bang!
Half of the lizardmen charging at them fell to the ground. The lizardman warrior at the front was hit by five throwing axes and died without even making a sound.
The lizardmen's morale finally collapsed. Some of the warriors had already begun to flee out of fear.
It had been less than fifteen minutes since the Whiterun Guards had broken through the gates. The Whiterun Guards had advanced five hundred paces and killed more than a hundred lizardmen. Less than seven of them had been injured, and most of them had been shot by arrows. Not a single enemy managed to break through their formation. Some of the foolish lizardmen who jumped into the square formation were instantly killed before they could even touch the ground.
This was simply a massacre!
A merciless massacre of a mob by a regular army.
