In late June, after "Pulp Fiction" had been released for two weeks and earned $27 million at the box office in North America, Adriaan and Kate arrived in London first. They first visited Kate's family, and then went to Emma's house.
The little girl looked very happy. Her eyes were almost curved into crescent moons, but she still ignored Kate. Well, she would react occasionally, but she would either make a face or deliberately pretend to say "I don't like you". Although Kate was very depressed and indignant, she shrugged helplessly like before.
"Alright, don't take it to heart, Kate. She's only a two-year-old child." On the way back to the hotel, Adriaan comforted his lover as he drove.
"I know she's only a two-year-old child, but …" Kate gestured with her hands, looking a little annoyed. "Even if I left a bad impression on her because I hit you, isn't this impression a little too long?"
"That's not surprising, Kate. Children have very good memories. They can remember a lot of things in a day, so when we were young, we always felt that every day was very long." Adriaan shrugged his shoulders. "When she grows up and starts to learn more complicated things, she won't remember such a small thing."
"How long will that take? Two years or three years? " Kate's tone was a little teasing. "You have to know that you promised to take her to the set to play. That means that in the next few months, I still have to watch her eyes on the set."
Adriaan had come to London to produce a movie, not to take a vacation. Naturally, he couldn't stay at Emma's house. The little girl was very unhappy, so Adriaan had to promise to take her to the set to make the little girl happy, even though she didn't know what the set was.
"Alright, instead of arguing about this, why don't you think about how you're going to perform? Otherwise, you'll have to watch my eyes." Adriaan laughed, but then became serious. "I won't let you off just because you're my girlfriend, Kate!"
"You'll see," Kate said confidently.
Three days later, the entire crew of "Howard Manor" arrived in London, including the new Best Actor, Anthony Hopkins. Although Hopkins had always had doubts about Adriaan directing the movie, after talking with him and thinking about it for a long time, he finally decided to play along.
"As Eide said, some things have to be tried to be known. I have faith in him," Hopkins said to his agent, who was worried about his reputation.
After another two days of preparation, after Emma Thompson came to check in, the crew immediately came to the Brynner Manor, which they had rented earlier.
“Cut!” Adriaan suddenly shouted. The actors on the set suddenly stopped and looked at the director sitting not far away. There was no accusation or reprimand as they had imagined, only a helpless smile from Adriaan.
"Sorry, I made a mistake." He sighed and said, "Everyone is in a good state. Let's start the next scene."
On the set, Kate couldn't help but burst into laughter. Then Thompson also covered her mouth, and Hopkins also shook his head and lowered his head. Along the way, the sound of soft laughter could be heard everywhere.
Adrian lowered his head to look at Emma in his arms without saying a word. The little one was still happily pulling on his collar, not realizing what she had brought with her. Faced with this situation, Adriaan could only sigh heavily, which immediately attracted more laughter.
After about ten seconds, the laughter finally stopped.
"Are you all relaxed?" Adriaan glanced around and then waved his hand. "Then let's continue."
The story of the novel "Howard Manor" was actually very interesting. Simply put, Margaret, played by Thompson, and Helen, played by Kate, met the conservative Wilcos family by chance. Mrs. Wilkes and Margaret got along very well, so before she died, she wanted to give Howard Manor to Margaret. But her husband, Henry, played by Hopkins, thought it was a ridiculous decision, and so did his children, so they hid the will.
Then, because of a series of events, Henry was attracted to Marguerite and finally married her. Although Margaret had always wanted to make the atmosphere between the two families harmonious, it had never worked. Later, Helen invited her friend Leonard to Howard Manor as a guest. When Henry found out that Leonard's partner turned out to be his former lover, he drove them away in anger, and Helen chased after them. When she returned to the manor a few months later, she was already pregnant with Leonard's child. The eldest son of the Wilkes family, Charles, thought it was improper, so he accidentally killed Leonard, who rushed to the manor, and was thrown into prison.
In the end, Margaret took charge of Howard Manor and moved in with Henry, Helen, and Helen's child, thus fulfilling Mrs. Wilkes's will, and the barrier between the two families disappeared.
Such a coincidence was so meaningful, it was no wonder that many people thought that Edward Morgan Foster had written a fable about life and were amazed by the story. Many people also thought that Margaret and her sister actually represented the new middle class of England at that time, while the Wilkes family naturally belonged to the conservative aristocratic class. The disappearance of the barrier in the end was a prophecy that the two classes would eventually come together, and so on.
For Adriaan, it didn't matter what the fable in the novel was. What mattered was what kind of benefits it would bring him after it was adapted into a movie. As a person who had been bombarded by information in his previous life, he actually didn't like this kind of slow and implicit British-style novels and movies. It was too boring, and one couldn't watch it without enough patience.
However, everything was for the sake of benefits. As long as the movie could bring him the benefits he wanted, he didn't mind spending time and energy to bring it to the screen. For directors, especially those who directed artistic plots, to make such a movie well, they must first have enough love for it, but Adriaan was obviously not one of them.
This is a test, and I will complete it perfectly! Adriaan said in his heart as he stared at the center of the set.
He had to admit that Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins were both excellent actors, especially Thompson, who portrayed the implicit awkwardness very well. No wonder she could win the Oscar for Best Actress.
"Anthony, if you don't work harder, I'm afraid Emma will steal the limelight." After shooting this part, Adriaan laughed and teased, "Show the demeanor of Professor Hannibal."
"Unless you want to see a Henry Wilkes who will eat his wife at any time, I don't recommend you to do that," Anthony said humorously.
He was wearing a black Victorian suit, and his hair was slicked back, which complemented Thompson's elegant long dress.
"So, you're just going to watch Emma steal the limelight from you?" Adriaan continued to tease.
"Well … it doesn't matter." Hopkins waved his hand generously. "Don't jump to conclusions so quickly. We're not done yet."
"Limelight?" Just as Adriaan was about to say something, Emma, who was in his arms and looking at the scenery in the distance, suddenly turned her head. "What's limelight?"
"I forgot that Emma is here." Adriaan shook his head helplessly.
"What's limelight? What's limelight? "Emma's eyes widened as she grabbed Adriaan's collar and asked.
"Limelight is nothing, my dear." Looking at the smiling Hopkins and Thompson, Adriaan patted the little girl's head. "Remember what I told you? We're going to start working again soon. "
Although the little girl was a little unwilling and even puffed up her cheeks, she still closed her mouth. Her pouting appearance was really lovable. In just a few days, her cute and well-behaved appearance had won the favor of the whole crew. Moreover, after learning from Thompson about her experience, many people felt pity for her, so the whole crew let her run around freely.
For a lively child of her age, this was a great privilege. Fortunately, before Adriaan brought her here, he had repeatedly told her not to cause trouble for everyone. Although the little girl was naughty, she understood that she shouldn't make him angry. So, although there were times when she interfered with filming, such as making too much noise or walking into the camera accidentally, it was all within an acceptable range. More importantly, even though she maintained her previous attitude towards Kate, she was relatively more subdued. He really didn't know if this was an instinctive reaction or if she really did know how to behave. But judging from the little girl's "past" future, it was probably the latter.
"Gehrlin, are you ready?" Adriaan shouted to the person in charge of the photography team.
"No problem!" Gehrlin, who had already set up the camera, gave a thumbs up.
"Willat?" He then looked to the other side.
"Yes." The makeup artist hurried over, followed by Kate, who was wearing a long Victorian dress.
One had to admit that although her face was a little oriental, every time she dressed up like this, she would reveal a classical charm. This was probably the charm of those elegant British women.
"Alright, everyone, get ready. Let's start." Adriaan resisted the urge to go forward and say a few words to Kate, and waved for everyone to get ready.
Kate took another look at him, but didn't say anything. She walked straight to her seat and began to wait. In fact, since entering the crew, Kate didn't say much to Adriaan, even though most of the crew knew about their relationship. Although Adriaan didn't agree with her mentality, he could only shrug to express his understanding.
